Lifelong defender of human rights
Mesha Monge-Irizarry has been standing up for people's rights and freedoms since her days as a Basque separatist in Franco's fascist Spain. She also had her voice heard during the student uprisings in France in the 1960s. Mesha, former head of the Shanti project. is now co-director of the San Francisco chapter of ‘Education not Incarceration’. Mesha is no stranger to oppressive government actions and we talk about the similarities between the situations today and those in the past. Many people who listen to these broadcasts are unfamiliar with living under constant threat. Mesha shares with us what it's like and also helps us understand the issues and challenges that face both children and educators today as we try to move forward toward an equitable tomorrow. We pick up our conversation midway as we have already been discussing some of Mesha's earlier exploits. Mesha Monge-Irizarry- Fascism is in the eye of the beholder.
